Brazilian filmmaker Petra Costa's new documentary, "Apocalypse in the Tropics," premieres this Monday, July 14th. The film began production during the production of her acclaimed previous documentary, "Democracy in Vertigo." "Apocalypse in the Tropics" addresses the influence of evangelical churches and pastors on Brazilian politics and their intertwining with the far right in the country. The film also explores the origins of religion in the country and the fundamental role of the United States in its arrival during the military dictatorship. In China, Petra gave an exclusive interview to Brasil de Fato reporter Mauro Ramos in June. The filmmaker was invited for the first time to be a juror in the "Documentaries" category at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival.
