Tajikistan - Khujand and Fann Mountains

Visit to Tajikistan, a post-Soviet country in Central Asia; Khojent - an ancient city on the Silk Road; journey through the picturesque Fann Mountains; mountain lake Iskanderkul and nearby waterfall. Tajikistan gained independence in 1991, after the collapse of the USSR. Until 1997, there was a civil war for power between government forces and the Islamic opposition. The conflict claimed an estimated 50,000 lives. President Emomali Rahmon has ruled the country continuously since 1992. About 10 million people live in Tajikistan. The vast majority of the inhabitants (about 97% of the population) profess Islam. Khujand is the second largest city in Tajikistan. It is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia. Panjshanbe Bazaar is the largest in the country. Its name means Thursday. Mountains cover 93% of Tadjikistan. More than half of the country lies at an altitude above 3000 m above sea level. Iskanderkul is a picturesque lake in the Fann Mountains. According to a legend, Alexander the Great stopped by this lake, and so the lake was named in his honor (his Persian name was Iskander).
