I reach the Arctic Circle for the first time in winter. Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village… and instead of magic – an overwhelming crowd and a quick decision: I'm leaving. In the evening, I descend to the frozen lake. It's about freezing cold. I'm cooking dinner, getting ready for the night… but suddenly, cars start arriving. Everyone's waiting for the Northern Lights, which aren't coming that night. I don't want to sleep in the crowds. I drive into the forest. The snow is over a meter deep in places, and most of the roads are impassable. I search blindly for a spot, until finally… I make it myself. I carve out a small clearing by the forest road with my Defender. There I spend the night. The temperature drops from -12°C to -22°C, and every turn on the road beforehand showed how drastically the weather changes here.
