A crew member dismantles his hotel room in search of a bug. He finds a metal plate screwed into the floor and unscrews it with a butter knife. With the last screw, there's a bang: the chandelier in the apartment below has crashed to the floor. But there were indeed bugs. This was the atmosphere on the set of Amadeus, an American film shot in communist Czechoslovakia by a director who fled that country in 1968 and returned as a traitor. Milos Forman hated biopics about composers. He said, "The regime loved the stories of composers because they make music and don't talk, so they don't cause problems." He had already seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as a story about his life under communism. Amadeus is no different: the Habsburg Empire in the film has all the hallmarks of Soviet power. Salieri's maid-spy is a tribute to the KGB. The mass grave where Mozart's body is dumped is an indictment of the practices of erasing individual identity—his father died in Buchenwald, his mother in Auschwitz. To secure financing, a studio offered money on one condition: to cast Walter Matthau, sixty-three, as the lead. "But Mozart died at thirty-five!" — "Who knows in America?" Kenneth Branagh was almost certain to cast Mozart, then Forman decided he wanted only Americans. Mark Hamill conducted hours of auditions, but his response was: "No one would believe Luke Skywalker is Mozart." For Salieri, he pushed Al Pacino, competing with Mick Jagger, Burt Reynolds, and Donald Sutherland. In the end, he cast two unknowns. Tom Hulce studied piano until he could even play it behind his back. F. Murray Abraham was cast on the spot, while he was reading Salieri's lines to help another actor rehearse them. To shoot in Prague, they had to negotiate with the regime. When the Czechoslovakian official demanded assurances that the film contained nothing politically dangerous, Forman responded with bitter irony: "Look, it's a film about Mozart." On July 4th, the crew unfurled an American flag inside a theater and started playing the anthem. Seven hundred Czech extras stood up to sing. Except for about thirty secret police agents, frozen and panicked—and that's how they revealed themselves.
