Full Concert: The Lau (2002) live at TMF Live | The Music Factory
Matheus J. "Thé" Lau (17 July 1952 – 23 June 2015) was a renowned Dutch musician and writer, celebrated for his significant contributions to the Dutch music scene and literature. Born in Bergen, North Holland, Thé Lau was best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the influential band The Scene. Lau's music career began with playing guitar in various bands, including Neerlands Hoop Express. In 1979, he founded The Scene, where he served as the lead singer and guitarist. The band became famous for its iconic songs "Blauw" and "Iedereen is van de wereld." After leaving The Scene in 2003, Lau toured Dutch theaters with keyboardist Jan-Peter Bast and later with the tango string quartet Pavadita under the tour title Tempel der liefde. In 2007, The Scene reunited with Lau and three former members—Jeroen Booy, Emilie Blom van Assendelft, and Otto Cooymans—and embarked on a new tour, releasing a new CD. In 2010, Lau achieved further success with the chart-topping collaboration "Zing voor me" alongside Dutch rapper Lange Frans. Lau also had a distinguished writing career. He debuted in 2000 with the short story collection De sterren van de hemel. In 2003, he published Thé Lau, de teksten, a compilation of his lyrics. His first novel, Hemelrijk, was released in 2004, followed by In de dakgoot, a collection of music stories. In 2007, he contributed to 1000 vissen, a collection of stories about Amsterdam's Spaarndammerbuurt, where he had lived and worked for 15 years. In August 2013, Lau was diagnosed with throat cancer and was informed in April 2014 that his condition was incurable. He passed away in June 2015 in Amsterdam, leaving behind a legacy of musical and literary achievements that continue to resonate in Dutch culture.
