Class on Fecal Occult Blood Testing | Understand the Types of Tests | Diet | Causes | Coprological Exam Class Content • Fecal Occult Blood: Most common causes: ulcers (gastric, duodenal and drug-induced), gastric or colon neoplasms, diverticulitis, colitis, epistaxis, some parasitic infections, among others. • Occult Blood - Guaiac Test • Based on the activity of pseudoperoxidase exerted by the heme portion of hemoglobin • Converts guaiac (colorless) into blue or blue-green. • Visible reaction if blood is present in the sample. • Many variables influence the result, such as diet. • Patient preparation • Sample collection after a specific diet* for three days before and during collection, on three consecutive days. • *Diet with prohibition of: • Red meat, white meat and derivatives; Foods with high peroxidase activity, such as: beets, spinach, radishes, turnips, broccoli, beans, cauliflower and melon; Fruits: bananas, apples, pears, black grapes and plums; Foods rich in vitamin C: oranges, lemons, acerola, mangoes, passion fruit, cashews, pineapples, guavas, papayas, strawberries, tomatoes and kiwis; Alcoholic beverages • Occult Blood - Immunochromatographic method with monoclonal anti-human hemoglobin antibody. • Material • All material from a bowel movement must be collected. • The sample must not be contaminated with urine. • The material cannot be collected from the toilet. • For children who wear diapers or who have diarrhea, the sample can be obtained using a "urine collector" type bag and delivered in the same packaging. • Interfering factors • The sample cannot be collected during the menstrual period or when there is bleeding from hemorrhoids (wait 48 hours). • Oral radiological contrast (wait 72 hours). • Preparation for radiological examination or colonoscopy with laxatives or enemas (wait 72 hours). • Sample processing • Collect the sample by inserting the applicator stick from the transport bottle (from the occult blood KIT) 3 to 4 times in different areas of the fecal sample. Clean the stick with absorbent paper. The amount of material left in the streaks is sufficient for the test.
