Review: He Shen's Mansion - Prince Gong's Mansion (恭王府) | Beijing | China | Tang Yu He Shen's Mansion is an extremely luxurious Qing Dynasty mansion. It has become a famous tourist attraction, drawing many visitors from near and far. He Shen's Mansion is also known as Prince Gong's Mansion. There's a famous Chinese saying: "A Prince Gong's Mansion, half the history of the Qing Dynasty." This saying reflects the mansion's extravagance and He Shen's immense power in Chinese history. He Shen's Mansion is currently located on Liuyin Street, Xicheng District, in the heart of Beijing. It's an ancient architectural structure, preserved intact for over two centuries. The mansion is vast and opulent, associated with many intriguing stories from the Qing Dynasty. About the "Number One Corrupt Official," He Shen If you're a die-hard fan of Chinese historical dramas, you've certainly heard of the corrupt official He Shen. He served as an official under the Qing Dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. He embodied the saying "second only to the Emperor, above all others," and had a profound influence on the historical upheavals of the Qing court at that time. He Shen was a favorite of Emperor Qianlong during his lifetime. He was both a notoriously corrupt official and a notorious playboy. Legend says that He Shen once boldly declared: "Whatever the Emperor has, I also have. Whatever the Emperor doesn't have, I must have." While this statement might sound boastful and arrogant, it was actually quite true. He Shen's wealth and extravagance were proven to be no less than that of the Emperor, Qianlong. According to historical records, He Shen's wealth was so vast that it equaled the entire Qing Dynasty's national treasury for 15 years. He lived an extremely lavish life, building the He Shen Mansion, which is now listed as a key national protected historical site. The Construction of He Shen's Mansion In the 41st year of the Qianlong reign (1776), He Shen commissioned the construction of a magnificent mansion situated beside the Qianhai and Houhai lakes. Located northeast of the Forbidden City, the mansion was initially called "He Shen's younger brother" after He Shen's surname. The construction of He Shen's mansion was extremely expensive. He Shen selected only the most luxurious and rare items to create this renowned mansion befitting his power and status. In 1799, after the death of Emperor Qianlong, Emperor Jiaqing ascended the throne and dismissed He Shen from his positions as Grand Minister of the Military Council and Commander of the Nine Gates. He searched his residence and confiscated his property, totaling over 20 million taels of silver. Emperor Jiaqing then bestowed white silk upon He Shen as a farewell gift. He Shen's residence was later transferred to Prince Yonglin, Jiaqing's younger brother. In 1851, this residence came under the ownership of Prince Yixin of the Palace and was renamed the Prince Gong Mansion. This name has been used ever since. During the Republic of China era, the Prince Gong Mansion was sold to the church, and later purchased by Furen University to be used as a lecture hall.
