She Crossed the Oregon Trail at Age 9 — Her 1939 Story Still Survives

At nine years old, Virginia Cramer crossed the Oregon Trail with her family in 1864. Seventy-five years later, in 1939, she was interviewed in Philomath, Oregon, and recalled the journey in remarkable detail. She remembered the wagon train, a frightening encounter on the trail, the desert crossing to California, and the moment their oxen smelled the Truckee River after crossing the Nevada desert. Years later, Virginia and her husband settled near Marys Peak in Benton County, Oregon, where she established the Peak Post Office and served as postmaster for more than twenty years. Today, the town of Peak has disappeared, but its cemetery—and Virginia's memories—remain. Much of the narration in this video comes directly from Virginia Davidson's 1939 interview, preserving one of the rare firsthand accounts of the Oregon Trail told by someone who experienced it as a child.
