Before LinkedIn, before AI, and long before I ever walked into a college classroom, I wrote a song called "Can You Take The Time?" at 17 years old. I didn't have an expensive piano or high-end gear. I chose the acoustic guitar purely because it was cost-efficient—the instrument was affordable, the strings were cheap, and I was determined to learn without breaking the bank. I didn't know the formal academic names for things like "voice leading" or "modal mixture" back then; I just trusted my ear to build chords that felt honest. It turns out that intuitive choice—like jumping from a Cmajor7 straight to an F#minor—broke traditional pop geometry in a way that modern music theorists actually appreciate. There are two ways to make it in music. You can take the heavily funded shortcut backed by deep pockets, or you can build it from scratch with raw resourcefulness and a cheap set of strings. There is nothing wrong with wealth, but true craftsmanship comes from learning how to navigate the limitations of your environment.
