Unlike Western fly fishing, which involves casting long lines over long distances, tenkara fishing uses only a rod, heavy line, and fly – a very simple setup without a reel – making it a highly engaging fishing method where anglers trick stream fish as they move along the river. It's an aggressive style of fishing where you cast the fly relatively close to the fish and detect bites precisely. Its compact size makes it easy to pack away when moving, and it's popular among mountain trackers. Originally, it's said to have developed in various regions as a technique used by professional fishermen from the early Edo period. It's believed that tenkara fishing became widely known in 1964 when Dr. Motoseki Yamamoto, a physician in the Kiso region where I live, first used the term "tenkara" in an article he wrote. Of course, it's said that Dr. Yamamoto learned tenkara from the elderly people of Kiso who taught him how to use flies. Some theories suggest it originated in the Kiso region, while others claim it originated in Gujo, Gifu Prefecture. However, my research suggests that samurai from the Kaga domain settled in the Kiso mountains, and that what they originally used as ayu (sweetfish) flies evolved into tenkara flies.
