Transmission Cooler Installation (Toyota FJ Cruiser)

When you install an external transmission cooler, you have two choices how you can do it. #1, you can install it "In-Series" with the stock transmission cooler in the radiator meaning the fluid will run through both the stock cooler and the aftermarket cooler before the fluid returns to the transmission. #2, you can bypass the stock cooler in the radiator and the fluid is only running through the aftermarket cooler. The benefit of bypassing is you no longer have to worry about a cooler failure in the radiator which could destroy your transmission. If the cooler in the radiator cracks, the ATF can mix with the engine coolant and that contaminated mix can make it back to the transmission and kill it.
