Paul Biya On Trial In Paris? The Tchiroma Move Nobody Saw Coming
Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary — a former minister and government spokesman who broke with President Paul Biya — has filed two criminal complaints at the Paris judicial tribunal against Biya and more than 20 senior officials, invoking the principle of universal jurisdiction over the repression that followed Cameroon's disputed October 12, 2025 presidential election. In this program, we lay out exactly what was filed, who is named, and what universal jurisdiction can and cannot do. Then we ask the question almost nobody in the English-speaking world is asking: why France? Why would a man who says he won an African election walk into a French court and ask French judges to weigh his case? We connect this to his exile in The Gambia, and we follow up on a question we raised in our last Gambia episode about how the world treats African leaders. Analysis, not emotion.
