Distance Handling 101 - Foundation Skills: Episode 10 - Two Bowl Game with an Obstacle

In this Episode: We are going to progress the two bowl game by adding an 'obstacle' into the mix. I am using a traffic cone, but I have done this game using a backpack when at a training session or even a wastepaper basket. In this stage we are getting the dog to move around the obstacle to reach the reward as a foundation for creating independence over actual agility equipment. The dog is learning that to get to the reward at the next bowl it has to do something in-between - in this instance divert a fraction off its path to go around a cone. This game develops further confidence as well as teaching our dog's to problem solve and to work independently. It is suitable for any age of dog as we are not asking for tight turns or for any jumping, but with younger puppies I would keep sessions very short, no more than a minute long. This game is such fun for the dog once they figure out what to do that you will find they start to offer this behaviour whenever you place an object in front of you, which is an example of transferring the learning we are developing here onto other obstacles. Traditionally, handlers have endeavoured to run with their dogs around a course. However, with courses becoming bigger, it is increasingly vital to teach distance handling for dog agility. While some handlers may have physical limitations that mean they cannot run with their dogs, even handlers that are fit and able will need distance handling skills. These skills include - obstacle independence - ability to respond to verbal as well as physical cues - great drive and focus forward However, distance handling can often seem daunting to those who have never tried it. In this new series, I am going to explore the foundations for great distance handling. You will learn the key training techniques, exercises to build drive and independence and develop your skills as a distance handler. ***** About me! I have competed in agility since 2013 and have qualified for various regional and national finals.
