Leading Japanese property developer Tokyu is participating in the creation of a new city in Vietnam, modeling it on the suburban neighborhoods the railway and real estate company has built in the southwest region of the Tokyo metropolis. As a key infrastructure component for integrated development of the entire city, Tokyu established a bus service, called Becamex Tokyu Bus, in 2014 to connect the construction areas scattered around the city and to promote the use of public transportation. In Vietnam, motorbikes are the most common form of getting around, but they also cause problems such as pollution and traffic jams, which the new city wants to avoid. The company started operation in December that year with a single route, but has since expanded its service to five bus routes. To provide high-quality bus service in the city, Tokyu introduced a Japanese-style training program for drivers that involves such common routines in Japan as following an operational checklist, making regular announcements for passengers and checking each bus carefully before driving. All drivers go through at least two months of training.
