Beli Manastir is a small but historically rich town located in the Baranja region of eastern Croatia. It serves as the administrative center of Croatian Baranja and is part of Osijek-Baranja County. The city's name dates back to the Middle Ages, when in 1227 the Hungarian palatine Moys de Daro built a monastery on his estate in the town of Pél, near the present-day suburban settlement of Branjin Vrh. Over the centuries, it has been shaped by various cultural and political influences, including Hungarian, Ottoman, and Habsburg rule. Historical Significance: First mentioned in 1212 under the name Pél, Beli Manastir has a long history tied to its monasteries, which were repeatedly built and destroyed during Mongol invasions, Ottoman conquests, and other conflicts. Cultural Diversity: The town has been home to diverse ethnic groups, including Croats, Serbs, Hungarians, and Germans, contributing to its rich cultural heritage.
