The song helped bring 1950s-style rockabilly back into mainstream pop and rock during the early 1980s. Fronted by Brian Setzer, the band mixed vintage rock ’n’ roll influences with punk energy and flashy musicianship, creating a sound that felt both retro and modern at the same time. Lyrically, “Rock This Town” is all about youthful energy, nightlife, and tearing up the town with music and dancing. The song captures the rebellious spirit of early rock ’n’ roll, with references to cruising, dancing, and live music culture. Its upbeat tempo, slap bass, twangy guitar riffs, and driving rhythm made it one of the defining rockabilly songs of the MTV era. The track became a major hit in the UK before crossing over internationally, helping establish the Stray Cats as one of the biggest revival bands of the decade. The music video — featuring the band performing in a stylish retro setting — became an MTV favorite and reinforced their slick 1950s greaser image. “Rock This Town” remains one of the group’s signature songs and is still celebrated as a high-energy anthem that introduced a new generation to rockabilly music.
