He serves as the main antagonist of the Reassembly campaign and the events surrounding The Winter Soldier. Once Dr. George Tarleton, he is now a psychic organism created solely for the purpose of killing. MODOK believes in science above all else and seeks to replace humans with superpowers with machines that only he can control. In his twisted worldview, he must destroy both the Inhumans and the Avengers to save humanity. George Tarleton grew up on a farm in an undisclosed rural area. As a child, he discovered an abandoned wolf cub in the woods beyond. Against his father's advice, George adopted it, believing he could tame it. However, a few months later, the adolescent wolf contracted rabies and attacked George, killing the family dog, Darwin, forcing his father to shoot it. After the incident, Tarleton concluded that creatures acted only on nature and were impossible to domesticate. While exploring the San Francisco Bay Area, George discovered a material he named Terrigen. Together with Dr. Monica Rappaccini, he founded Advanced Idea Mechanics and experimented with the substance, discovering that it could be used as an energy source. After sharing their findings with Avengers member and former classmate of Rappaccini, Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk, they were able to secure the funding needed for their experiments. Tarleton and Rappaccini were able to establish a laboratory in the San Francisco area and hire their own staff, including Emil Blonsky as head of security. However, they also worked for Stark Industries and S.H.I.E.L.D. Unknown to everyone, Tarleton expressed resentment towards the Avengers, believing them to be an uncontrollable force and a distraction from people like him. Having created predictive models of energy amplification at the molecular level, Tarleton asked Bruce Banner to quickly review his latest calculations and verify them. Due to a recent experiment involving controlling the Hulk, Banner was in a bad mood and politely declined. Enraged and believing he was too focused on his romantic relationship with Rappaccini, Tarleton decided to conduct the experiment himself. Having set up the laboratory, Tarleton carried out the first two phases of the augmentation process. However, something went wrong, causing the machine to leak energy. The resulting explosion knocked Tarleton unconscious but also transformed two nearby guards into a massive electrical monster. After the Hulk defeated the creature in combat, Tarleton was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. After receiving treatment, he approached Tony Stark after meeting with Banner, refusing to comment on the connection between the creature and his experiment. Considering the events a "terrible failure," he convinced Stark to fund his search for safer forms of energy production, sharing some of his models with the billionaire.
