Our CEO, Bernardo Bastos, explains the 3rd stage of the selection process for the trainee pilot category: the Qualifications Assessment. To become a Pilot in Brazil, the candidate must be approved in a process organized by the Brazilian Navy called: PSCPP – Selection Process for the Trainee Pilot Category, which consists of the following stages: 1st STAGE: written exam; 2nd STAGE: document submission, psychophysical selection, and physical fitness test; 3rd STAGE: qualifications assessment; 4th STAGE: practical-oral exam. Candidates who pass all 4 stages enter a qualification program lasting between 12 and 18 months, during which they perform supervised pilotage maneuvers. Normam 311 (Maritime Authority Standards for Pilotage Service), in accordance with the Law on Safety of Waterway Traffic (Law 9.537/97), article 2.2 indicates the requirements to participate in the selection process. The main requirements are: • Be Brazilian (both sexes), with a minimum age of 18 (eighteen) years completed by the date established in the Notice; • Possess a higher education degree officially recognized by the Ministry of Education and completed by the date established in the Notice; • Be a seafarer in the deck or engine room section and at level 4 (four) or higher, Pilot or Pilot Trainee by the date established in the Notice; or belong to the Amateur Group, at least in the Master-Amateur category, by the closing date of registrations. But who exactly is a Pilot and what do they do? Brazilian Law 9.537/97, ​​which governs the safety of waterway traffic, known as LESTA, defines a pilot in its Article 2, XV as: "a non-crew waterway professional who provides pilotage services on board". Article 12 defines pilotage service as a service that: "consists of a set of professional advisory activities to the Captain required due to local peculiarities that hinder the free and safe movement of the vessel".
