Ban Laem District, Phetchaburi Province, is considered one of the largest sea salt producers in Thailand. This practice is practiced in almost every subdistrict, and locals have a long-standing connection to salt farming, spanning generations. Salt farming does not solely benefit the farm owner. It relies heavily on manual labor at every stage, from land preparation to the salt-making process, often referred to as the farmer. Essentially, there are people who pile up the salt sheets, remove the salt, and process the salt. Crucially, there are also "salt carriers" who transport the salt to the granaries during the salt-making season. However, the bustling season lasts only four to six months, from January to June, during the dry season, or three to five months, depending on the annual rainfall. Ban Don Phing Daet, Bang Khun Sai Subdistrict, is another village with a large number of salt carriers of all ages and genders. They rely solely on physical labor and personal equipment, such as buckets and poles. All salt carriers report that carrying salt is both hot and tiring. But I'm happy to work because I receive fair wages, earning 500-1,000 baht, depending on the amount of salt I carry.
