Shen Hao 4x5 In The Desert

In this video, I’m shooting large format film photography while traveling the rugged route from Chicken Corners back to Moab, Utah. The drive offers a constantly changing landscape—sheer canyon walls, vast desert vistas, and quiet moments where slowing down with a large format camera feels especially fitting. I walk through my approach to composing with a view camera, reading the light, and deciding when a scene is worth the time and effort that large format demands. All of the images in this video were shot on Kodak Ektar 100, a film I love for its fine grain, subtle contrast, and ability to render color in desert environments with incredible clarity. This is a slower, more deliberate way of working—letting the terrain, light, and process guide each photograph as the journey unfolds back toward town. Thanks for coming along for the ride.
