Welcome to the extraordinarily comprehensive Brown Swiss special in the "Old Livestock Breeds" series. The Brown Swiss is one of the oldest and most important cattle breeds in the Alpine region. The term "Original Brown Swiss" refers to particularly original specimens of the Brown Swiss population, barely influenced by Brown Swiss genetics from America. These are very rare today and are being specifically promoted in both Switzerland and Austria. In this video, I also show Montafon cattle, a distinct Brown Swiss breed that has survived in Vorarlberg. The two color variants "Gurten" and "Blüem" (Ryf) also receive more than just a brief mention in this episode, and of course, I also briefly address the topic of "Brown Swiss." Highlights of this episode are certainly the cattle drive from the mountain pastures in Appenzell, as well as footage of Brown Swiss calves in suckler cow husbandry.
