Signed by Okeh Records in 1922 she was one of the most successful blues divas of the 20s. She also performed in movies and appeared in the first talking picture with an all Black cast, Darktown Scandals Review in 1930. The song is about a woman stating she doesn't want to get married and have the man's babies but just wants to be his mistress, therefore the reference to "I don't want to be no sow back, I want to be your sweet loving old soul.")
