Tuba Skinny in Philly '22- Sweet Loving Old Soul, Tuba Skinny classic tune 9/2/22
Commodore Barry Club, Philadelphia PUP Jazz Fest, Benefit for the Philadelphia Unemployment Project Released by Sara Martin and her Jug Band, May 1925 Sara Martin was one of the most popular classic blues singers of her time and her recordings with Louisville jug bands are thought to be the first jug band recordings ever made. Signed by Okeh Records in 1922 she was one of the most successful blues divas of the 20s. She also performed in movies and appeared in the first talking picture with an all Black cast, Darktown Scandals Review in 1930. Lyrics My Momma told me and Papa told me too He said you're my sweet baby no matter what you do And the boys all told me that I was just a girl Don't want to be no sow back, be your sweet loving old soul I want to be your sweet loving, your sweet loving, your sweet loving old soul I want to be your sweet loving, your sweet loving old soul Don't want to be no sow back, be your sweet loving old soul Now let be your side track till your mainline comes I can do more siding than your mainline ever done Let me be your teddy 'till your big bear comes Now don't you tell your big bear what your teddy has done. I want to be your sweet loving, your sweet loving old soul I want to be your sweet loving, your sweet loving old soul Don't want to be no sow back, be your sweet loving old soul In the South the reference to "sow back" is to a brood sow (female hog used to breed pigs). The song is about a woman stating she doesn't want to get married and have the man's babies but just wants to be his mistress, therefore the reference to "I don't want to be no sow back, I want to be your sweet loving old soul.")
