We first spoke with Pete at the RYA Dinghy Show 2023 and he talked about building a Jimmy Skiff 2 rowing and sailing boat with the guys at www.fyneboatkits.co.uk and being interested in electricfying it. He has now finished the build so we met up down at Mudeford harbour to see what motor and battery options would suit Pete and his beautiful boat. He will primarily be using it as a rowing boat for when he is not sailing and wants a back up in case of getting stuck rowing and also for just cruising around. We looked at lots of options and he decided that the Protruar 1 or 2 12 volt motors plus a Traveller Pro battery were best suited so we took them both out. The Protruar 1 motor was more than up to the job but Pete preferred the considerable extra power of the Protruar 2 and he will also be using it on his Seafly sailing dinghy. We used approximately 40% of the 100ah battery in 40 minutes of pretty arduous work mainly at between half and full throttle so we now that in normal conditions we could expect 4-5 hours at around 3 knots - more than enough for most people's requirements? Coming back in to the very shallow water at Mudeford, the ability to both lift the motor vertically AND tilt it makes it very easy and safe to use in these types of conditions. These are fantastically flexible motors and batteries and can be used in all kinds of ways and on all sorts of craft. We are more than happy to come out locally with some motors and batteries for on the water testing with your boat or one of ours and we also have some motors and batteries available on our "Hire and Buy" scheme where you can test the kit on your boat and return it if you do not keep it just for the cost of the delivery both ways and a nominal hire fee.
