Used of kings as well as of Yahweh. David wrote this as a shepherd-king who knew the word from the inside. shub (Piel, yeshovev; Psalm 23:3): causing to return. Not emotional refreshment, but a sheep that has strayed brought actively back to where it belongs. tsalmawet (Psalm 23:4): tzel (shadow) and mavet (death) fused into one compound. The grammar makes it a place walked through, not a permanent destination. chesed (Psalm 23:6): not general affection, but covenant-committed loyalty, the steadfast, pledged faithfulness by which Yahweh keeps His promises to those who belong to Him. radaph (Psalm 23:6): to pursue, to chase down.
