In Armor of God Pt 2: Belt of Truth, Walking The Text founder Brad Gray reveals the meaning behind the belt of truth. As we’ll see, Paul believes we’re engaged in a cosmic struggle with the forces of evil, and he encourages believers to stand firm by putting on the full armor of God. In order to make this idea vivid for the Ephesian church, Paul uses a metaphor they would’ve known well: the armor of a Roman soldier. The first three pieces of armor Paul mentions were meant to be worn at all times. The last three pieces were only to be taken up when the battle was fierce. The belt of truth actually comes from the Greek word Aletheia and is better translated as “truthfulness.” In fact, Isaiah 11:1-5 describes the coming Messiah as one who will have the belt of faithfulness around his loins. When the Hebrew word faithfulness was translated into Greek, it was translated as truthfulness. But why does Paul connect the belt with truthfulness? For a Roman soldier, the belt had weighted leather straps that protected the soldier’s most vulnerable parts. No matter how tough or strong, a shot to the groin could drop a soldier in an instant. Likewise, when we’re not truthful, we become vulnerable. By the end of Armor of God Pt 2: Belt of Truth, you’ll see just how important it is that we wear truthfulness at all times so evil doesn’t kick us in the groin.
