Summer’s finally here! Well, it is where I am in Boston. While this is definitely a weirder summer than usual for all of us, there’s still nothing quite like a piece of summer-y sounding music. Sinnoh’s Surf theme is a great example of that music! While it’s a bit different than the other generation’s Surf themes (with Johto’s probably being my all time favorite), Sinnoh’s Surf theme is still wonderfully lush! Although I think the original orchestration is a bit sparse for what the theme could have been, the wonderful melody still sticks out. This is one of those melodies that I’d just burst out singing in the shower! I think lush orchestra and some warm brass do a great job of conveying that relaxed, bright, summery feel, so I thought I’d apply those ideals when arranging this surf theme! Oddly enough, I arranged this back in… November or December of 2019, so I didn’t exactly have any present-time summer inspiration to go off of, haha! The orchestra and brass parts here were recorded before social distancing measures were implemented, if anyone was wondering about that. I had originally scored the brass parts for flugelhorn, French horn, and trombone, but I had a difficult time getting a French horn player available for the session day, haha, so I ended up converting the part to a second flugelhorn. Worked out pretty well! I was kind of going for a very romantic Hollywood style beachy / warm feeling with this arrangement, and I think it worked out well! I also had the random idea to throw in a melodic solo at the end - the reedy texture of the melodica gives the arrangement a bit of a French tinge, I think - although a real accordion would definitely be better suited for that role, haha! I’m currently in the home stretch of Year of Sinnoh production, so videos will be coming out every other week (but I’ll be doing a lot of tracks behind the scenes!) More great stuff coming!
