The U-Boat Awarded An Iron Cross
In September 1939, in the first weeks of WW2, a German U-boat scored a notable success in sinking a British aircraft carrier, causing consternation in London and jubilation in Berlin. The reaction of the German Naval Command was interesting - the Iron Cross was ordered to be awarded to every man aboard that U-boat, effectively awarding it to the U-boat itself, a unique event in WW2 history.
