HS2 Timelapse | Final piece installed at Chipping Warden green tunnel

Watch the moment the last of 5,020 precast concrete segments is lifted into place at the Chipping Warden Green Tunnel – completing a major milestone on the HS2 route between London and the West Midlands. At 1.5 miles (2.5km) long, Chipping Warden is one of the UK's longest cut-and-cover railway tunnels. Built within a cutting and covered with earth, it will reduce noise and visual impact, helping the new railway sit naturally within the Northamptonshire countryside. Over the course of construction, teams more than doubled their segment installation rate by refining methods, improving logistics and carrying out off-site testing – a significant productivity achievement. Work is now under way on waterproofing, internal floor slabs and emergency walkways, ahead of railway systems installation. Once complete, the tunnel will be landscaped with restored hedgerows, woodland planting and new habitats. Chipping Warden is one of five green tunnels on the HS2 route. Together, they are designed to reduce environmental impact while supporting a railway that will boost connectivity and free up capacity on the West Coast Main Line for local passenger services and freight 📢 Subscribe for the latest news and updates from Britain’s high-speed railway, HS2.
