It's named after the Dutch city Leiden, where it was first described. It is a cofactor with factor Xa, resulting in increasing the cascade to end up with increased polymerization of fibrin, forming clots too quickly. Doctors diagnose it by having a high index for suspicion for anyone with a clot. Venous clots or pulmonary embolus among ethnic Europeans can show over 30% probability of having this. If a patient has a clot, docs should check the clotting time. If positive, they should do the genetic test.
