Gustav Klimt | il bacio

The audio painting is a simple way to experience the greatest masterpieces in the history of art in just a few minutes. Here I'll talk about Gustav Klimt's The Kiss. ▼▼CONTINUE BELOW▼▼ In a mass of shapes and designs, the silhouette of a kissing couple emerges from a field of flowers. This work owes much to the Vienna Secession of 1900, which included several artists and would profoundly influence the visual and applied arts in Europe. Gustav Klimt left the Secession in 1905 but was inspired by the works of Margaret Macdonald, wife of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a leading figure of the Scottish group The Four. Macdonald had a linear style that included the use of pietre dure in her works. The theme addressed here is that of amorous fulfillment, already depicted by Klimt in the last panel of the Beethoven Frieze, which refers to a phrase from Schiller's Ode to Joy: "Let this kiss go to the whole world." The artist, however, set aside the political meaning of Schiller's words to express a more personal sentiment. The kiss in the frieze and the one you see here are both set in an enveloping space. The painting is decorated with circular biomorphic shapes filled with flowers, which we also see on the woman's dress. The male figure's dress, on the other hand, is characterized by square and rectangular shapes, contrasting with the female figure's. These decorative motifs are the result of the symbolism that is a trademark of Klimt. The image as a whole has an almost hypnotic allure. The color gold dominates the painting, emphasized by the bright colors of the details and the rich design of the garments. The sensuality of the image is conveyed by the sinuous lines, the relief the image takes on, and the sumptuous colors that create a dreamlike world of pomp and decadence. The video is also subtitled in Italian, English, French, and Spanish.
