He Broke A Direct Order To Save 831 Drowning Enemies. Then They Court-Martialed Him.

November 1942. A German U-boat surfaced in the South Atlantic — 800 miles from land — and found something its captain wasn't supposed to stop for. A British troopship was going down fast. Over 900 men in the water. Four-metre swells. No rescue ships coming. Kapitänleutnant Werner Hartmann had a direct order in his pocket: the Laconia Order, signed by Admiral Dönitz three weeks earlier. No rescue of enemy survivors. Not under any circumstances. He stopped anyway. What followed was 16 hours on the surface — 16 hours any passing aircraft could have found him, 16 hours any destroyer could have ended him — while his crew pulled 831 men out of the South Atlantic one by one. Then one of those men talked. And Dönitz found out. This is the story of the gap in the war diary. The 16 hours Hartmann left out of the official record because he knew exactly what he had done — and he knew no report could explain it to anyone who hadn't been on that bridge. ⚠️ Educational Disclaimer: This video is a historical documentary created for educational purposes.
