FIRST TIME WATCHING DOWN PERISCOPE — THIS MOVIE IS RIDICULOUS 😂

This is one of those movies where you can tell immediately what kind of ride you’re about to be on. The premise is ridiculous, the tone is goofy, and the cast looks like they showed up ready to lean all the way into the bit. And honestly? That’s exactly why it works. I’ve always had a soft spot for *Down Periscope*. It’s the kind of mid-’90s studio comedy they just don’t make anymore — big ensemble, broad characters, and a premise that exists purely to set up jokes and let actors bounce off each other. *Kelsey Grammer* as Commander Tom Dodge is the perfect anchor for the insanity. He plays it straight just enough to keep the movie grounded, but there’s always that little smirk like he knows how absurd this situation is. Dodge is a guy nobody takes seriously — patched-together submarine, ragtag crew, career hanging by a thread — and the movie gets a lot of mileage out of watching him quietly prove everyone wrong. The crew is where the real fun happens. This submarine is basically the Island of Misfit Navy Personnel. You’ve got *Rob Schneider* as the painfully eager XO, *Harland Williams* as the unhinged sonar guy who treats whale sounds like a symphony, *Lauren Holly* as the officer who actually knows what she’s doing, and a parade of oddballs that feel like they were pulled straight out of a Navy fever dream. And the submarine itself — the *USS Stingray* — might be the funniest character in the movie. It’s rusty, outdated, and sounds like it’s going to fall apart if someone sneezes too hard. Watching this clunker go up against the Navy’s shiny modern fleet is half the joke. What I appreciate now, coming back to it, is how committed the movie is to its tone. It’s not trying to be edgy. It’s not trying to reinvent the genre. It’s just a goofy underdog comedy where a bunch of misfits slowly figure out how to work together. Does every joke land? Of course not. It’s a ’90s comedy — some gags are very of their time. But when it hits, it hits because the cast is having fun and the movie understands its own ridiculousness. There’s also something comforting about the structure. Underdogs. Bad equipment. No respect from the higher-ups. And then slowly, through a combination of dumb luck and actual skill, they start outmaneuvering the people who underestimated them. Down Periscope isn’t high art. It’s not trying to be. But it’s funny, it’s charming, and it has that relaxed mid-’90s studio comedy vibe that’s become weirdly rare. Sometimes you just want a movie where the heroes are piloting a rusty submarine, blasting music underwater, and annoying the entire U.S. Navy. And this one delivers exactly that.
