Like a maze! Night drive Hanoi old Quarter

Hanoi’s Old Quarter (Phố Cổ) is the city’s largest tourist area, stretching north of Hoan Kiem Lake. With a history spanning approximately 1,000 years, it is also known as “Hanoi’s 36 Streets” due to its legacy as a thriving artisan district. Even today, each street is packed with specialty shops, local cuisine, and historic buildings. Must-See Major Attractions Since the Old Quarter is full of narrow alleys, the best way to explore it is on foot or by cyclo (three-wheeled bicycle). Hanoi’s 36 Streets: Street names include the word “Hang” (meaning “merchandise”), preserving the history of commerce from that era. Hàng Gai Street: A beautiful street lined with silk shops, tailors, and souvenir stores. Hàng Mã Street: Lined with decorations for annual festivals and paper crafts, this is the most colorful street in the Old Quarter. Hoan Kiem Lake (Hồ Hoàn Kiếm): Located at the southern tip of the Old Quarter, it is a symbol of Hanoi. On weekend nights (Friday 7:00 PM to Sunday midnight), the surrounding area transforms into a vast pedestrian zone. Dong Xuan Market (Chợ Đồng Xuân): One of the city’s largest three-story indoor markets, located at the northern end of the Old Quarter. It’s the perfect place to pick up souvenirs and soak up the local atmosphere. Old House Museum (Ma Mai House): A museum preserving a traditional merchant’s house (tube house) from the late 19th century (admission: approx. 20,000 VND). O Quan Chuong Gate: A precious historical structure and the only remaining gate of the 16 that once surrounded Hanoi Citadel. Hanoi Cathedral (St. Joseph’s Cathedral): A grand Gothic-style cathedral built during the French colonial era (1886), located in the southwest of the Old Quarter. This is a must-visit spot when you come to Hanoi. I’ve been here countless times, but I often get lost every time I come. While there are traditional shops, new restaurants and other businesses frequently come and go.
