He Built This House as a Wedding Gift -- Now It's a Civil War Landmark ( Cheraw SC.)

Hidden right here in my hometown of Cheraw, South Carolina, is one of the most personal stories I've covered on this channel. The home known as Enfield at 135 McIver Street was built around 1815 by Brigadier General Erasmus Powe — a War of 1812 veteran — as a wedding gift for his daughter Martha and her husband John Ellerbe. He even personally planted the avenue of cedar trees that still stand in the median of Cedar Avenue today. But fifty years after it was built as an act of love, this same house became the headquarters of Union General Oliver Howard during Sherman's march through Cheraw in March 1865. General Sherman himself used the Powe family home just up the road at 143 McIver Street. Cheraw, South Carolina is one of the most historically rich small towns in the entire state. And it's home. 📍 Enfield — 135 McIver Street, Cheraw, SC 29520 📍 Cheraw Historic District — National Register of Historic Places (1974) #CherawSC #SouthCarolinaHistory #HistoricHomes #CivilWar #CarolinaTony If you Love Travel and learning new things, Adventure Awaits: "Join me as I explore the world's most intriguing places, from abandoned ruins to historic landmarks.
