'No cure for stupid': Scott Bessent takes shot at Gavin Newsom during media briefing

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took aim at California Gov. Gavin Newsom during a White House news conference on Thursday when questioned about ongoing criticism from the Democratic governor. "There's no cure for stupid," Bessent said. The remark came after a reporter asked Bessest what his response is to Newsom's idea of a 100% state tax on California residents who receive money from President Donald Trump's "Anti-Weaponization Fund." Bessent did not elaborate on his comment and ended the news briefing, as he had said the reporter's question would be the last of the day. Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) unveiled the Anti-Weaponization Fund, saying it was designed to compensate people who claim they were unfairly targeted by politically motivated investigations or prosecutions by the federal government. The program would reportedly total about $1.776 billion. The money stems from a settlement tied to the leak of Trump's tax information, as IRS records were improperly disclosed to media outlets. "President Trump s a great American who has endured more than 10 years non-stop harassment and weaponization from federal and state government actors," Bessent said. "A bad actor at the IRS leaked more than 400,000 tax returns, including the Trump family, all the employees, and that’s how we got here," Bessent added. The DOJ said Trump, as well as Donald J. Trump, Jr., Eric Trump, and the Trump Organization, LLC, filed suit against the Treasury and IRS in Southern District of Florida federal court following the leak of their tax returns.
