"Elijah" ~ from my 2020 release "Your Spirit Is a Work of Art"! ABOUT THE SONG: Songwriting has always been a process of discovery for me. Sometimes I set out with an idea in mind, a story I've heard, witnessed, or envisioned whose message is aching to be revealed through the writing process. Other times, the lyrics crawl through my fingertips and onto the page before I even know what they mean, as though I'm just the medium through which someone else is writing. That was the case with Elijah: I sat down at the piano. Words sang through me. I wrote down what came out. The original copy of lyrics is nearly unedited; it came out practically finished. It arrived with a message that taught me something about myself. I think in many ways the song offered me perspective on themes I was grappling with at the time, themes that we've all encountered at one time or another: love, abandonment, forgiveness. Ultimately, I've come to see the song as a memento of a gift I once received: the gift of coming to know one's own soul through recognition of the self in another.
