Mercy, Not Merit

This message challenges us to examine where we believe we sit in God's kingdom - at the adult table with the righteous, or at the kids' table with those who know they need healing. Drawing from Matthew's calling and Jesus dining with tax collectors and sinners, we discover that faith isn't about qualifying ourselves through good behavior or religious performance. Instead, it's about entrusting ourselves completely to the One who calls us to follow. The religious leaders of Jesus' day had turned faith into a merit system, but Jesus turned everything upside down by choosing to sit with those deemed unworthy. The profound truth emerges that those who recognize their spiritual sickness are the ones who truly need and receive the physician. When Jesus quotes Hosea - 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice' - He reveals God's heart for broken people over religious performance. This confronts us with an uncomfortable question: Do we sometimes act like Pharisees, requiring others to get their lives together before they're worthy of God's grace? Or do we embrace our place at the table with Jesus, acknowledging our own brokenness and extending the same radical mercy we've received? Chapters Chapter 1: Qualifying for the Adult Table 0:00 - 2:22 The sermon opens with a relatable story about sitting at the kids' table versus the adults' table at family gatherings, introducing the theme of qualification and worthiness. Chapter 2: Jesus Calls Matthew from the Tax Booth 2:22 - 4:54 Jesus encounters Matthew, a tax collector considered a traitor to his people, and simply says 'follow me' without requiring him to clean up his life first. Chapter 3: Dining with Sinners and the Pharisees' Challenge 4:54 - 8:14 Jesus sits at table with tax collectors and sinners, prompting the Pharisees to question His disciples about why their teacher associates with such unqualified people. Chapter 4: The Great Physician and God's Mercy 8:14 - 11:05 Jesus responds with the analogy of a physician, explaining that He came for the sick who know they need healing, not for those who think they are well. Chapter 5: Sitting Where Jesus Sits 11:05 - 13:42 We are challenged to examine whether we act like Pharisees or embrace our place at the kids' table with Jesus, extending mercy to others as He has shown mercy to us. #mercy #grace #faith #forgiveness #lordssupper
