Losses from the disease can occur in both seedbeds and production areas. If plants are infected in seedbeds, disease symptoms begin to appear within six weeks of transplanting to a growing environment such as a field or greenhouse and can occur in almost all plants. Plants affected early in the disease cycle generally show signs of stunting, while plants infected later or after transplantation experience premature leaf drop. After this leaf drop, symptoms also appear on the fruit, and excessive leaf drop can cause plants to suffer from secondary damage such as sunburn.
