Exploring Aircraft Wrecks of the Peak District | Gloster Meteor & Bolton Defiant
This solo hike had it all. Aircraft wrecks, the UK's largest landslip, Alport Castles, and the Dambusters. What more could you want!! It's a failry moderate hike with the only real ascent at the very start. It commences at Fairholmes Car Park before heading up Haggside to the first wreck and then over Rowley Pasture to the second. Then on to Alport Castles which is amazing!!! and the Uk's largest landslip. After which you drop down to Howden Reservoir and head walk along the full length of that and Derwent Res where you can see the Dambusters memorial. 📍 Cathedral Tracker App Track every cathedral in Britain and plan visits http://bit.ly/4sv1kvn GPX file download All my routes are in my facebook group for downloading so please join   / 848917369739840  Facebook Page   / thepeakdistrictviking  Outdooractive route link https://out.ac/IHhG4X Links to useful Information Gloster Meteor - https://www.peakdistrictaircrashes.co... Detailed Route Start at Fairholmes car park at the visitors centre on Derwent Reservoir. SK GR 17271 89318. Leave the car park and take a left along the road until you reach the footpath on the right at GR SK 17239 89113. Follow the marked path up the hill. On the map it is shown as a track that ends half way up, however, there is a clearly signposted and well trodden path so keep following that until you reach GR SK 16594 89066 the site of the Gloster Meteor wreck. It is off to the right of the path near to the dry stone wall in a small indent in the ground. There are only a few pieces of wreckage left. From here return to the path and follow it up the hill to you cross the stile at GR SK 16358 89039. Here go straight across and follow the path up the hill toward Rowley Pasture. At GR SK14897 90281 take a right across the pasture to the high point at GR SK 14974 90382 from here you can drop down the hill to the Bolton Defiant wreck at GR SK 15286 90495. Return to the path the way you came and continue to follow it to Alport Castles (this is an amazing place and the UK's largest landslip) at GR SK 14124 91590. Next follow the path to the right down to Howden Reservoir until it meets the road at GR SK 15488 92760. Follow the road to the right, there is currently a diversion around a temporary logging site but it is well marked. The route now is very straightforward as you follow the road all the way along the length of Howden and Derwent Reservoirs. Make sure you take in the Dambuster memorial at Derwent Dam and keep an eye out for the small tin huts marking the location of Birchinlee or "Tin town" which was built for the Dam workers back in 1902. At GR SK 17113 89736 just past Derwent Dam take the footpath to the left back down to the car park.
