Smell prevention and pest deterrent are the two main reasons. The two most common varieties of lime are hydrated lime and garden lime. Hydrated lime is potent; highly effective but caustic, when mixed with water (like urine) it can cause burns. Garden lime is safe but not especially effective. That’s where First Saturday Lime comes in. First Saturday Lime claims to be the best of both types so it’s effective like hydrated lime but safe like garden lime.
