On June 6, 2026, my wife and I went to Mt. Heiji to see the Rhododendron kiusianum. To avoid the parking scramble, we left the night before and slept in our car at the Oike trailhead. We had originally planned to camp, but changed our plans due to the rain forecast. We walked through the damp, moss-covered forest, passing through Ootogoshi on our way to Mt. Heiji. The weather was changeable, with periods of fog and clear blue skies, but we were able to encounter beautiful Rhododendron kiusianum again this year. We also had a reward after descending the mountain and some wonderful encounters, making it a memorable day. We hope to convey at least some of the charm of Mt. Heiji and the joy of hiking.
