In December 1939, the Finnish 34th Infantry Regiment—four thousand peasants, lumberjacks, and smallholders from the Karelian countryside—received orders to hold thirty-two kilometers of frozen river front against a Soviet corps that eventually concentrated more than eleven thousand men against it, with artillery, armored support, and the full logistical weight of the largest military organization on earth. They held it for ninety-seven days. They held it without retreating a single kilometer. Soviet forces attempting to cross the Kollaa River failed in every major attack and suffered casualties that Finnish and Soviet records combined put at between eight thousand and twelve thousand, in a sector where the defenders never had more than four thousand men on the front. The paradox to which military historians repeatedly return is this: How can a force outnumbered at every point along its front, receiving no significant reinforcements, yet maintain a defensive line for three and a half months against an enemy possessing essentially unlimited manpower and materiel—and what does that tell us about what actually wins a war under conditions for which conventional military doctrine was never designed?
