Change #1 – Taxes We'll start with something that could get expensive from now on. The deadline for filing your 2025 tax return was July 31, 2026. If you're required to file and haven't yet submitted anything, the clock is ticking. The tax office will then charge a late-filing penalty of 0.25 percent of the assessed tax, but at least €25 for each month or part thereof that you're late. They can also estimate your tax base – which is usually to your disadvantage – and impose fines. But here's the good news, which many people don't know: This deadline only applies if you're actually required to file. If you file voluntarily, you have four years – so for 2025, that's until the end of 2029. And that applies to a large number of employees. So, before you panic, check whether you're even required to file. And if you're using a tax advisor or a wage tax assistance association, you have until March 1, 2027, anyway. But here's the good news, which many people don't know: This deadline only applies if you're actually required to file. Change #2 in August 2026 – Family The next point directly affects millions of families. On August 1, 2026, the legal entitlement to all-day childcare comes into effect – initially for first-grade children, then one grade level higher each year, until it applies to grades one through four starting in the 2029/30 school year.
