Can an 80-Year-Old Cable Shovel Widen a Driveway?
Can an 80-year-old cable shovel still get real work done? Instead of grabbing the Kobelco excavator, we decided to put our Bucyrus-Erie 10-B cable shovel back to work and see if it could widen the driveway at our new farm. I've run plenty of hydraulic excavators, but spending an entire job behind the levers of a cable machine is a completely different experience. After learning the controls and fighting the slower digging cycle, we find out just how much work these old machines can still accomplish—and whether they deserve a place on a modern jobsite. Would you rather run a vintage cable shovel or a modern hydraulic excavator? Let me know in the comments!
