Muhammad Ali, a charismatic, outspoken, incredibly fast, and brilliant young man who had won an Olympic gold medal for the United States in 1960, became the great hope of American boxing. In 1964, he became champion when, against all odds, he defeated Sonny Liston, thus becoming the world heavyweight champion. He then announced his conversion to Islam and adopted the name Muhammad Ali. In 1967, the United States entered the Vietnam War, and Ali was called to join the conflict, but he flatly refused and was stripped of his titles, sentenced to five years in prison, and had his boxing license revoked. For Ali, going to war was a betrayal of his principles and religious beliefs; he said it wasn't worth fighting for a country that didn't respect its people. He uttered one of the most powerful phrases in the history of sports: "No Vietnamese person ever called me a black."
