ACMAD MACAMMAD AL-JOOHARIY Ahmed Mohamed Al-Johari passed away on June 24 in Ayssaita, Afar Region, Ethiopia. He was a towering figure in Afar poetry and a pioneer of modern Afar music. Johari is a celebrated poet in the 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐰 and 𝐒𝐚𝐱𝐱𝐚𝐪 traditions—𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘱𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘺, 𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘮, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘥𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭, 𝘳𝘩𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨— 𝐀𝐥-𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟒 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜, following the opening of the Radio France Overseas (R.F.O.M.) station in Djibouti under the French administration. He continued his musical contributions until 1967, when he moved to Addis Ababa to lead the newly established Afar-language program on the Voice of Addis Ababa’s external service.
