The U.S. and Iran have reached a breakthrough in Switzerland after last-minute mediation by Pakistan officially cleared the way for Iranian oil to return to global markets for the first time since 2018. The temporary oil license is cleared through August 21st, alongside a 60-day roadmap toward a final deal that includes lifting naval blockades and a major $300 billion reconstruction plan. However, a massive geopolitical roadblock remains as the deal requires Israel to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon, which Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz have already flatly refused to do. Because of this stance, Iran is already threatening to halt all commitments, setting up a major showdown over the next two months. Back at home, Bank of America made a massive hawkish pivot, completely rewriting their forecast to now call for three interest rate hikes this year under new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. The economic data is strongly backing this hawkish case, with the U.S. Economic Surprise Index hitting 63.2 points—its highest level since August 2023 after a massive 7-week surge. Traders need to brace themselves because this stronger-than-expected data gives the Fed plenty of ammunition to keep pushing rates higher. To add to the chaos, JPMorgan warns that a massive $165 billion end-of-quarter institutional rebalancing wave is about to hit global markets as heavyweights like Japan and Norway rotate out of outperforming stocks and into bonds. This represents the largest rebalancing wave in at least four years and will hit the tape right alongside a major NASDAQ 100 rebalancing.
