In this video André Bertel Shihan (7.Dan) explains the two-tiered approach to training and the meaning of "adaptive reliability": As a beginner in martial arts you need to stick to the standard basic form and learn the exact 'text book' movements. Once you have reached Shodan blackbelt level you can start to adapt the techniques to your own physique, health and personal preferences. The goal is to reach an optimal level of Karate-Do that is reliable under any circumstance.
