How big is the difference in rolling resistance between TPU and butyl inner tubes in everyday use? In this video, I compare both types of inner tubes in real-world test rides using a unique vehicle that can only roll. Perfect for a rolling resistance test, right? Of course, this applies equally to bicycles. The tests take place outdoors – on the road, with consistent riding and reproducible procedures. Both tubes were tested with 20-inch wheels of the same brand, both rim and tire (tube), at 7.0 bar. Please note: Contrary to what was previously stated, the test track in the final test run for determining the distance was not 100 meters, but rather 248 meters, according to Google Earth measurements. The difference was the aforementioned 17 meters, representing a 6.8% increase in rolling distance with the same effort. However, 2 meters must be subtracted from this because the S2020 was slightly heavier, and therefore (mass momentum, force of gravity downhill) 2 meters of the length measurement are due to its additional weight. The corrected result is a 16-meter difference over a 248-meter rolling distance, i.e., 248 meters versus 265 meters, resulting in a 6.4% difference in the rolling distance.
