A Boat Trip Into the Unknown — And a Perfect Right Pointbreak
“We’re chasing something that I’ve never seen before.” It’s raining, you climb on board a boat, and it takes you into the middle of nowhere. At night. Soli Bailey’s done a lot of Maps trips, but never one quite like this — to a surf zone only recently opened to any kind of access, let alone to a bunch of frothing surfers. Early next morning, after battling a couple of very big fish, the crew arrive off an island that looks weirdly unlike any you’ve seen — like a cold land in tropical warm water. Explorer Matt knows there’s at least one wave here, but suspects there might be many more, rookie superstar Sophie McCullough isn’t quite sure what’s going on till she sees the first wave, and Ian Crane’s just stoked to be on a boat trip. “It’s the best way to go surfing,” he claims. But is it? Watch and find out. *** Coming next: Ep 3, “Chasing Seconds,” on show May 11th. Stay tuned for details!
